Cape Town was set to face Day Zero – the day when all water runs out – in March or April this year. Due to the timeless effort of the residents, Cape Town will not be running out of water till August 27 this year. The better news is that August is the month of expected heavy rainfall in the region. However, if the precipitation is as little as it was in 2017, Day Zero will come racing back in early 2019.
The city has cut down its water consumption from 1.2 billion litres per day to around 500 million litres. Nonetheless, Cape Town requires more sustainable solutions to its water crisis as droughts could be frequent in the future due to climate change.
