SciShorts: China Tasks 60,000 Soldiers with Planting Trees

China is suffering severely from air pollution. To battle the ever-growing production of smog, the country has redirected 60,000 soldiers to plant 84,000 square kilometers of trees. Most of the troops will be sent to the most polluted province in China – Hebei – where the forest coverage is expected to grow to 35 percent by 2020. Although this effort is appreciable and will increase the total forest coverage of the country from 21 to 23 percent, more plans need to be laid out in terms of curbing the production of harmful gases.
